The Miller House by Eero Saarinen: A Mid-Century Modern Home

And everything from glassware, lighting, and furniture took on a whole new look. IKEA is by far the most recognized name to bring beautiful and functional everyday objects to the masses. Did you know Craig Ellwood, the man who designed three Case Study Houses, was not a licensed architect? (… but he did take night courses in structural engineering at UCLA extension.) His ability to blend the formalism of Mies van der Rohe with the informal style of California modernism places him among history’s greatest American architects of the modernist era. Mid-century modern is more than just a home designed by Richard Neutra or any of the other great modernist architects. The Miller and Herriott House, also known as the Miller and Herriott Tract House, is a historic Victorian house in the North University Park section of Los Angeles, California.

His celebrity client list included Frank Sinatra, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, Lon Chaney, Barbara Stanwyck and Charles Correll. And while he is mainly known for character homes dripping with detail his architectural prowess covered midcentury, Tudor-revival, French Chateau, Regency, French Country, and Mediterranean architecture. One of few single-family residences by the celebrated Finnish-American designer Eero Saarinen, the Miller House remains a key example of midcentury modern residential design.

Just as Saarinen gained inspiration for his modern designs from classical architecture, Kiley’s landscapes were a modernist’s interpretation of historic European gardens. For the Miller property, Kiley divided the landscape into four sections—each with its own identity—that were meant to be extensions of the four wings of the house.

Modernica continues to produce the Case Study Fiberglass Chairs that was originally designed in 1948 as an entry in The Museum of Modern Art’s International Design Competition. In 2000, Miller House further solidified its rarified stature when it became the first National Historic Landmark to receive its designation while one of its designers (Kiley) was still alive, and while still occupied by its original owners. After J. Irwin and Xenia Miller died, their heirs donated the house and many original furnishings to the Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA) – now part of Newfields cultural campus. Miller House is a 20th-century icon, a crown jewel in the famous architectural destination of Columbus, and one of the most significant examples of Mid-Century Modern residential architecture in America.

Still, 37 “no” votes, while a break from Washington’s ironclad support for the Jewish state, fell short of the opposition bloc progressives had hoped to muster. Thirty-nine Democrats had voted “no” on Friday on the rule to allow the foreign aid package to come to the House floor, a target that progressives just missed on Saturday on the Israel bill.

The bright and playful textiles added warmth to a space that otherwise might have felt stark. He gained inspiration for the 50-foot rosewood and walnut storage unit in the living room from one that George Nelson built for the Herman Miller Company in 1946. Girard also designed the gate to the pool area, an iron piece with American folk art motifs. Kiley and his Harvard contemporaries rejected the tenets of Beaux Arts design that then formed the core of the landscape architecture curriculum and went on to publish their own manifesto of modernism.

For Schiller, his grandparents’ home only later became a point of intellectual and academic interest during graduate studies at Yale’s School of Architecture. It should be noted that Saarinen, who passed in 1961, had already produced many of his iconic works when the Millers commissioned him to design their home in 1953. He designed the 630-foot-tall, Gateway Arch monument in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1947 (though it was not completed until 1965), as well as the Womb Chair for Knoll, which remains in production today. Designed by Eero Saarinen with interiors by Alexander Girard and landscaping by Dan Kiley, the Miller House was commissioned in 1953 by wealthy industrialist and modern architecture patron J. Echoing one of the many grievances shared by hard-right Republicans who opposed all of the aid measures, Mr. Good said his support for “Israel’s right to defend itself remains unshakeable” but that he disagreed with a measure that would add to the nation’s debt. The plan, laid out in a rule that passed on Friday, was concocted to capitalize on the pools of support for each part of the $95 billion package, while preventing opposition to any one piece from taking down all of them.

Democrats put up a big vote — 174 — in favor of this bill, which was intended to sweeten the overall package for conservatives. While all Democrats voted in favor of aid to Ukraine and all but Ms. Tlaib supported funding to Taiwan, 37 left-leaning Democrats defected to vote against the Israel aid bill. They said before the vote that they opposed unfettered aid to Israel that could be used in its offensive in Gaza. The opposition to the Israel aid represented a minority of Democrats, but reflected the deep resistance to unconditional aid and the divisions in the party on Gaza.

It was the first property to receive this designation while the building was still occupied by its original owners and while one of its designers (Kiley) was still alive. The Miller House and Garden is one of the country’s most significant examples of modernist design applied to a residential structure and its interior and landscape. Located a couple miles north of downtown Columbus, Indiana, it is one of many outstanding landmarks of modernist design in the neighborhood. Architectural historians have described it as one of the most innovative houses of the era. At the Miller House, however, Saarinen and Roche’s work follows the tradition of International Style modernism, with its flat roof, wide expanses of glass windows and slate walls that form a rectangular, open-plan structure.

Children under 10-years-old are not permitted on the tour (including infants and toddlers). Please note the Miller House and Garden is open by guided tour only and is not included in Free First Thursday. Before the event on Sunday, the Iowa Democratic party rebuffed Miller-Meeks’ event saying Johnson’s appearance was a reward for her support of party leadership. Johnson said he didn’t want to shut down the government because of the disruption it would cause, but also because it could result in Democrats utilizing the shutdown to campaign against Republicans jeopardizing their one-vote majority. After McCarthy was ousted, Republicans went through a host of senior House Republican leadership until Johnson was nominated and unanimously elected by House Republicans to lead the chamber.

The result was a one-story rectangular structure of over 6,800 square feet within a 10-acre garden. The house sits on a plateau with the site sloping down towards the Flatrock River. The surrounding residential neighborhood, full of modest traditional houses from the 1930s to the 1960s, stands in stark contrast to Saarinen’s modernist design. As head of Cummins Engine, was to create civic and institutional buildings in their town located 45 miles from Indianapolis, hoping to transform and reinvent into a hub of inventive design. Eero Saarinen worked with interior designer Alexander Girard and landscaper Daniel Kiley to best fulfill the ideas he had in mind for the house and garden.

My husband, Bill, and I prepped for our afternoon visit to Miller House with a morning drive-by bus tour of nearly 40 other modernist gems that help give Columbus its distinction as an internationally renowned mecca of masterworks of modern art and architecture. Under Miller’s guidance, Cummins established a foundation in the 1950s that fostered the construction of modernist buildings, art, and landscapes by donating design fees for projects that retained renowned contemporary architects. Commissioned in 1953 and completed four years later, the 6,800-square-foot Miller House was the home of noted industrialist and philanthropist J. Irwin Miller, chairman and CEO of then-Cummins Engine Company, his wife, Xenia Simons Miller, and their five children.

Editor-in-chief Kelsey Keith first visited the Miller House in Columbus, Indiana, back in 2011. She returned for another peek this summer, while in town for Exhibit Columbus, a biennial that activates public space as an entree to all the town’s architectural treasures. “If we keep the train on the tracks, and we keep going forward and keep trying to advance the ball, as far as we can off the field every day incrementally we are going to grow that Republican majority, win the Senate, and win the White House back,” Johnson said.

The house showcases the work of leading 20th-century architects and designers Eero Saarinen, Alexander Girard, and Dan Kiley. Alexander Girard, the interior designer, infused the space with warmth and color, balancing the home’s geometric precision with vibrant textiles, furniture, and decorative items. A 50-foot storage wall, designed by Girard, showcases the Miller family’s eclectic collection of folk art and personal memorabilia, while custom-designed rugs and fabrics add layers of texture and interest to the space.
